Merry Christmas everyone ! While picking camelia from the greenhouse for our Christmas Eve dinner,- I think that I might share some images from our Christmas around here , which we celebrated last night on the 24th in goog , Lithuanian traditional style – most of my brothers and Sister attended ( the one from the East seashore ) and their children , and Joe ’s nieces , nephews and childhood protagonist . As this is the first yr without my Dad , ( it would have been in hundred-and-first Christmas in this house )   we still want to retain this dinner that the Lithuanians callKūčios , according to the Wikipedia , it ’s report as this : Everyone in a category spend a penny a particular effort to come home for theChristmasEve supper , even from not bad distance . They make the journeying not so much for the meal as for the sacred rite of Kūčios . Kūčios draws the kin members closer , banding everyone together and beef up the family necktie . In this spirit , if a family member has give way that year or can not attend the meal ( only for very serious reason ) an empty position is left at the table . A plate is still station on the table and a chair is pull in up , but no spoon , knives or forks are set . A small cd is placed on the plate and lit during the repast . It is believe that the spirit of the deceased family member participates in the Kūčios along with everyone .

We still place a seat at the table for the diverge . I know , it seems a slight creepy , but when you ’ve been doing it for your entire life history , it really becomes tradition . I blend in with admixture and match china as it seemed to fit with out theme of ‘ class artifacts ’ found in the cellar . Like old ski ’s only snowshoe , and old pinecones from past trips . Camellias from the greenhouse helped round off out all the older mercury class on the mesa . For more image from our Christmas celebration – cluck below .

The table was set for 16 , and we decided to give portraits of my parents on the wall , as this was my male parent paint studio back in the 1960 ’s when it was build onto our original house ( I know , the way still looks like it ! ) . One of these days I am going to get disembarrass of the wood pane , but it ’s a liberal elbow room and it needed a spate of prep workplace .

alternatively of a big piece of chalkboard artwork , or a bog 18 fundament tree , we choose for a more random and perfunctory display – rod cell with wrapped christmas lights ! These edison lights and white twinkle lights help determine the mood – and once it is dreary outside , no one ever have it off that the way really has very short lighting in it .

The flavour was indeed , old fashioned and a footling less formal .   We did n’t have to   purchase anything , depending in stead on find objects .

In the kitchen , I am stuffing my face with a Sir Francis Bacon - wrapped prawn ! Our menu this year included roast Prime Rib , mashed white potato , a winter salad of Frisee , Cichorium endivia , pomegranate and lineage orange , along with veg like Brussels spud with salute hazelnuts and a umber brioche pudding .

Why is it that everyone wants to advert out in the kitchen ?

Another traditional Lithuania effect aside from the beet soup and Silke . which is pickled herring , is this flat wafer call Kalédatis . Every Edgar Guest at the mesa takes a piece , and change a part with everyone else , offering a wish for the coming new class .   I can still retrieve my papa always says that his wish was that we woudl all be together next yr . In so many ways , this way , we were . Same planetary house , same fmaily , same table and friends .

We are Catholic Lithuanians , but abotu 1/2 of our booster are Jewish , who also attend dinner – no problem food - wise , as our kugulis , virtineae and herring , as well as chocolate-brown bread , and other knockout are so similar in both religion . Eastern Europe is still , Eastern Europe .
