Artistic Collaboration Goes with the Flow
When downhill rainwater runoff plagued a family ’s place in the Bouldin Creek locality , they plunged into a whimsical , colourful , underwater - themed response . Local creative person united to reframe a beige , boxy house into a gregarious octopus and elegant mermaid alight above a acrobatics current framed by aboriginal plant . “One of the saying here in Bouldin Creek that I do n’t hear a lot anymore was you could n’t throw a rock without hitting a local artist , ” owner Joey Trevino severalize us on our visit in April and May 2023.“And that ’s becoming less and less straight all the time as people are being driven out of artistry , out of Austin who are artistic and creative . ”“So I want to make an amazing house , but I also wanted to further all these hoi polloi so that they could stay here . ” Innovative builderNelson Rockwoodserved as universal contractor to orchestrate the creative collective behindOctopus House . A large solar array on the ceiling powers the house during the day and charge PowerWall batteries to power it at nighttime . Mural design : Mishka Westell . Painted by Aaron Flynn . Mermaid : Designed by Daniel Hornung and forged by Pyrology Foundry and Studio . Rain Lily Designframed the architecture with body of water - wise plants and pollinator habitat . Her sweet frivolity resemble my cutie Jamie ! So , bunnies hopped into our animated garden design , works and architecture chat . purpose challenges included the narrow sloping lot and a drainage plan to avoid future flooding . Then , Joey wanted to trounce body of water anxiousness with a soothing water lineament . Focal Point Featuresand designer Dan Johanson responded with a natural - styled tumbling stream and waterfall . Heidi chose a native dearest mesquit for its cascade shape that gently shade understory flora like tropical sage . A Nipponese maple impart its warm glow . She desire plants that complement the artwork , rather than compete with it . Most of the plants are native and all are very drought tolerant . “My focus was picking a hatful of different textures , soothing different shades of gullible , and pop of color , “ Heidi said . Plus , they wanted flowers for bee , butterfly stroke , and hummingbird . She combine leafy bamboo muhly and sedges with seasonally bloom Gregg ’s mistflower , frogfruit , ‘ Katie ’ ruellia , bulbine , and several salvias . I think she ’s got native snake herbaceous plant in there , too . “My favorite groundcover is frogfruit , which just propagate really abundantly and it also blooms like unhinged , so you ’ll get lots of bee for that one , ” she added . I love how she softened the logic gate ’s flagstone with frogfruit . Nearby , bamboo muhly , rock rise , winecup , bulbine and white mist-flower expand with little maintenance or irrigation . She ’s coach Texas wisteria over the entrance . “The idea over clock time is that the vine kind of grow in over the fallal , that you ’ll be kind of walk almost into a garden as you come into the house , ” Joey tell . Door carved by Craig and Teena . varnished shabu crafted by Jim Berry . To accent with quartz , Heidi and Joey rocked out at Nature ’s Treasures – a wonderland favourite of mine , too , for its oculus pop compendium of crystals , tumble pit , tilt and jewelry . They select this show-stopper for Focal Point Features ’s backyard stream . “ There ’s something calming about the body of water , ” Joey say . “ It ’s almost like reckon into a fireplace . You just get drawn into it . ” Gutters direct rainwater into a 4,000 - gallon underground piss storage armored combat vehicle to top off the streams and water newly found plants . Designed elements transition into East Bouldin Creek that run through the backyard . Sculpture ‘ Mother Nature ’ oversees the dappled shade domain . Sculptured by Stuart Simpson of Austin Carving , it part out as two tons of local limestone . Heidi dot its foot with Brazilian quartz and Moroccan geode . Here , she works with part - shade plants admit vining coral honeysuckle ( hummingbird fave ) , soft folio yucca , sedge , sage , bamboo muhly , ming fern , river fern , oakleaf hydrangea and frogfruit . In the evening , Joey and his married woman settle in with a glass of vino and heed to the piss . You’ll also distinguish the family on the upper porch , where a sea horse by atomic number 10 artist Evan Voyles lights up the night . “ So it was a wonderful collaboration for me , ” Joey said . “My preferent part is working with all these creative person .
