I have a few friends who are working with backyard aquaponics right now , including my friend Larry who has just rebuild his intact aquaponics system , as you could see in my new video :
There ’s a lot going on there and it ’s still a brand - new apparatus .
Redundancy and Experimentation
One thing I find quite interesting about Larry ’s backyard aquaponics system is how he ’s integrated grow bagful horticulture , sewer gardening , wicking garden bed , gravel bed and tilapia all into the same plan . He ’s also fence in those garden with other gardens and food project , include rich mulch gardening , grapes on conducting wire , a lowly plantation , copper , chickens , goats and more .
It ’s very ( as aspiring philosophers might whisper in the high-flown atmosphere of worldview study classes and theological libraries)syncretistic .
The combination of multiple gardening mode into a system builds redundancy and elasticity .
When I created my homestead in North Florida , I did n’t just rely on that food for thought forest . I also imbed annual gardens and grapeshot vine , red-hot vat ponds and greenhouses , roots and nut , etc .

Sweet potatoes ( 5 varieties ) , white potatoes ( 5 variety ) , unfeigned yams ( 4 varieties ) , taro root , malanga , dasheen , Jerusalem artichokes ( 5 varieties ) , cassava ( 4 varieties ) , yacon , turnips , daikon radishes , ginger , carrot , Maranta arundinaceae , cannas , ground nut , jicama , onion ( multiple mixture ) , garlic …
… and I ’m sure there are more I ca n’t remember off the top of my foreland .
Instead of just bond to a single subject for his backyard aquaponics garden , Larry integrated multiple different theme all play with the theme of using a constant water supply to grow crop .
There are a lot of functions that this scheme allow . In a belittled space , Larry is able to raise tilapia , create fish manure for his gardens and trees , start cutting in grow bag , acquire some ornamental pollinator - attracting species , raise vegetables for the board , garden without irrigation and keep delicate plant growing through the heat of summertime .
