Today ’s photograph are from Bill Albert in Waterville , Ohio . That ’s right , Ohio … . Sure does n’t take care like it ! Bill says,“This is my garden in Waterville , Ohio . It was start from a lawn and nothing else . All the hardscaping was construct by me . The yard is in full sun . The patio were given a southwest environment , succulent , cactus , ornamental grasses . I then wondered what could be done in the plain lawn that I wait out on . Let ’s test tropical !
“ The first yr , I plant one banana plant , Musa basjoo(USDA Hardiness Zones 8 - 11 ) . It did well . As I was instructed , at end of the summer it was cut to the terra firma and cover with four feet of leave . Uncoverng the bed the following spring , sprout showed up . I was gleeful .
“ Other ardent climate plant presently followed : Canna , hibiscus , croton , colocasia , coleus , castor bean , amaranthus , begonia , princess lily , tibouchina among them . In the year that followed , beds were added . A gazebo was progress . The prominent torii was built as a memorial to my donor . For many old age I had declining health due to an auto - resistant liver upset . In July 2010 , I take in a most precious gift that saved my liveliness .

“ The garden blooms all time of year , After the first toilsome frost , the banana tree are swerve down and covered . Cannas , colocasias , and others are dug up . The potted plants are drastically snip and institute inside . I have had some encouraging solvent by leaving some canna in situ , covering them with leaves with the banana .
“ The thousand has draw some attention from the area garden associations asking for tours . All leave very amused and passably awed . ”
