I spent a good part of today picking up the wintertime squashes   from around the raw garden next to the greenhouse . I should say , pick up the squashes which the cad did not think were doggy toys ! I say who could blame them , with their bright colors and rocky good , these squashes are pretty irresistible . I attempt about a half dozen of old selection and varieties , some date back to the 1600 ’s – oh so New England , but where they really perform in in the kitchen . Most of these Curcurbita maxima selection make the best pumpkin pie ( remember – one should never use field pumpkins as all pumpkins are C. pepo – far too watery and fiberous ) . Opt for a hubbard squash or Butternut ( which is C. moschata ) but that ’s fine . It create a fine pie . No commercial displace pumpkin vine mix used truthful orangish pumpkin . Always a right backsheesh to lie with .

Most winter squash pauperism to be lay in quick and wry , and not refrigerated , or below 45º F. They can remain out of doors until hard frost , but best to bring them in before long if frost threatens . Most should last until tardy winter , with many live on well into next spring and summer . An aged wintertime squash can become more angelic and buggy over time , and many varieties are good if aged until at least December , and are not as hunky-dory when eaten fresh from the battlefield .

I ’ve been a good male child this year , and I dig all of my Dahlia pinnata tubers . Usually I just countenance them go , out of ennui or laziness . This year , I eff my new selection of cut blossom dahlia so much that I ca n’t even imagine leaving them in the garden . Best affair of all is that each large genus Tuber has now grown into a large clump of genus Tuber . Each will take to be separated ( deletion ) from the main stem cautiously , label with a sharpie , and then stash away in a dry medium like soilless mix or vermiculite for the wintertime . I will hive away my genus Tuber in the cellar until next spring when they will be started again in the greenhouse . It look like I should have many more plant of each variety , which will be nice , as my initial investment was for only one tuber of each variety . Clearly , my population has produce tenfold .
