Where Did Your Interest In Plants And Gardening Begin?

“ My parents always gardened , but I never showed much interest in it when I was a child , ” shares Clare .

“ I was absorbing horticultural noesis the whole time by reading article , tattle to gardener and clothes designer , and gardening myself . Towards the end of my time at Gardens Illustrated , I had a baby – and then another one in quick ecological succession !

“ I was able to proceed working as a Garden Writer and Journalist three twenty-four hours a calendar week and still be there for my children . 18 eld later , I am still at House & Garden ! ”

How Has Your Love Of Gardening And Writing Complemented One Another?

“ I feel so lucky that I can combine gardening and writing in my life history . I make love both equally , and they really complement each other so well . horticulture is a strong-arm , practical pursuit , while writing is aware and sedentary .

“ Strangely , I write good when I go backwards and forwards to it , so I will quite often accent a committal to writing sitting at my desk with an hour or two out in the garden . It makes me return to the job refresh . I garden better in short bursts too . ”

You’ve Written Several Garden Books. Can You Tell Us About The Process Of Writing Them?

“ I have spell five or six book , include The Flower Garden , ” read Clare .

“ I enjoyed the process of compose that playscript tremendously , as it was a coaction with the photographer Sabina Ruber . We both trialled as many flowers from ejaculate as we could and compared bank note .

“ Our book is the event of those trials . It is not an exhaustive encyclopaedia of flowers that you may grow from seed but is our option of the easiest and most worthwhile peak to grow from semen . ”

“ There are so many memorable moment ! ” Clare shares .

“ I will never forget photograph Piet Oudolf ’s garden on a very rainy November twenty-four hour period with the photographer Andrew Montgomery . It was very hard but we get some amazing photograph of all the come head and Gunter Grass appearing almost luminescent in the rain .

“ I also think going around to bring down Lord Snowdon to personally pick up a set of photograph that he had taken for Gardens Illustrated .

“ Another memorable sentence was when Gardens Illustrated patronize a Chelsea Garden designed by Piet Oudolf and Arne Maynard – it won Gold and Best In Show and I remember their side when we received the news .

“ Having order that , I guess the pinnacle of my garden career had to be when Beth Chatto included my Compost Word of God in her top 10 garden Word ! ”

“ I am working on a duo of new playscript ; one for the hotel and estate Borgo Santo Pietro , and the other is another ego - published book with photographer Andrew Montgomery , send for ‘ Pastoral Gardens ’ . ”

How Do You Envision The Future Of Gardening And What Role Do You See Yourself Playing In It?

“ The future of the satellite and gardening is uncertain , and we have to adapt our horticulture proficiency and styles accordingly , ” Clare states .

“ The best we can do is be flexible in our attitudes , be undefendable to different plant , estimate and aesthetics .

“ I have been working on an on-going series of interviews promise Climate Crusaders in House & Garden . I have talked to the most riveting masses about how they are spearheading ways to counter climate change , from no - shot gardeningto agro - forestry .
