For one, I live in Northern California where the temps can really get down there but face it, we’re not Minnesota.
Here at the suburban farm , we have a small greenhouse we inherit with our home 6 years ago . It is a pocket-sized , 6 X 8 fundament nursery with fibreglass glazing and a southeast exposure . It is n’t much to look at as far as greenhouses go , but it ’s sturdy and has glazing so you wo n’t hear me complaining .
Up until now , I ’ve used it for a smattering of stamp potted or hanging plant life that vacationed alfresco during the warm season and needed protective covering from the frost during the cold months . For the most part , this has worked well out very well .
I experience in Northern California where the temps can really get down there , but face it , we ’re not Minnesota . Do n’t get me wrong , I have lose my portion of plants due of lack of vacancies in my household for overwintering plants . I thought I ’d give them a shot at winter life in the greenhouse . render not to be floor , it ’s not the first meter I ’ve been wrong .

This winter , I project on heating my nursery so that I can cause thing not only “ make it through the winter ” until the following warm time of year , but also in reality originate and fly high and , God willing , even propagate . My plan is to reap full function of my personal paradise this come ski season ; a slight green heaven in the otherwise gloomy months during Old Man Winter ’s reign .
I recollect one of the most interesting things about greenhouse growing is that you simply ca n’t duplicate the open , no matter what the season . A greenhouse is its own fauna ; you may take the same two tomato sort and plant one outdoors in the warm weather while the other grows inside a greenhouse and they ’ll perform otherwise . The two surround are reasonably unparalleled unto themselves . So , I find it exciting and challenging to learn the involution of greenhouse growing , whether it ’s for intellectual nourishment crop or ornamental .
Because every greenhouse provides different climates calculate on the size , shape , glazing , zona , placement , and plants you ’d care to spring up , I ’m read up on what might be the practiced ways to set up my nursery for the coming winter , as each plant life mintage has particular needs when it make out to heat and humidity levels . Because I ’m what gardeners call “ a gatherer ” ( which fundamentally means I ’m indecisive ) , I ’m giving up trying to settle which type of plant life I ’d care to grow and have instead determine to go eclectic . I ’m aiming for plants that relish a median warmth and humidness spirit level so I can have a variety of species inside the little building .

If anyone has any corking bakshis or ideas they ’d like to pass along , I ’d love to see them . Tell me about your succeeder and failure and what you ’ll do differently in your greenhouse this cold season .

This is our humble greenhouse. Standing in front of it is our cat, Nike. She has a sister named Puma. We named them after tennis shoe brands while going through our gym phase.
