maturate Food Not Lawns ! This is my new mantra . While lawns can be nice for playing soccer , rolling around on , or as a seat for your hound to poop ( do n’t roll on it after that ) , all of those tasks can be done elsewhere . Beyond that , with the drought that we ’re have out west , why would you want to waste your precious piss on a lawn when you could be using it to grow food instead ? Not to mention having to mow the darn thing . I ’d much rather be putting my energy into planting thing that will feed my family . And personally , if you do it right , I think it look a lot good !

We did exactly this of late for my sis ’s front yard near Portland , OR . By “ we ” I mean Joel , because he did it all . He is apermaculturemastermind and landscaper extraordinaire , so he bed what he ’s doing . But you do n’t need to be a professional to do this . It ’s in reality quite simple . In this post I ’m live to show you how to ditch your lawn and arise food or else !

First up , a couple of before shots of my sister ’s chiliad .

Before and after photos showing how to transform a lawn into a permaculture yard.

It ’s a pretty ladder of the pulverisation front lawn for a suburban Portland locality , ended with crappy appear nondescript bushes . Not that I ’m against stinking looking bushes , because they are industrial plant and they deserve a chance . But , especially when you have a low space , they should at least be functional by providing food or medicine , or by attract bees or other beneficial dirt ball .

How to Ditch Your Lawn and Grow Food

The first thing Joel detect were these retain paries blocks in front of the bushes . It ’s always nice when you may repurpose items that you already have ! Out came the stoppage , and the bushes . Sorry bushes , but we had no choice .

The blocks were set aside to be used to ramp up a garden layer .

My sister and her family are in use , so a pocket-sized one-year garden bed will work best for them . Joel put it fairly much properly in the midsection of the K to make it a focal point , plus it get the most sun .

A permaculture lawn with gravel, edible plants, and potted plants.

Now it ’s clip to raid your composition board stash ! This is how you will kill that lawn of yours .

Layer the composition board over all of the grass . Inpermaculturethis is the first step in sheet of paper mulching .

Take in consideration what other hardscaping you want and work around that . you may see a space where there is n’t any cardboard because there will be some brick abut there .

before shot lawn

We decide to uselandscape fabricon top of the cardboard in this particular situation to really make it down maintenance . Not quite thepermacultureway to do it , but a unspoiled option nonetheless .

Rock goes on one side , bark dust on the other . You know , to make it search pretty . Notice how we decided to keep the marvelous bushes between the houses . We considered ripping them out , but they assist as a barrier , which is nice when you hold up in a suburban neighborhood . Joel did prune them back a bit hop that they will fulfil out and search a bit nicer next year .

We prefer low maintenance , mostly native perennial and herb for the main plantings . blueberry , huckleberries , red currant , Oregon grapeshot , juniper , lilac-colored , rosemary , thyme , andmint . You could also growchamomile , sweet basil , chiveswith their beautiful pink flower , calendula , ororegano .

ditch the lawn

The finished ware ! This summertime they will implant tomato plant and peppercorn and other annual veggie in the box in the middle . The repeated bushes and herbaceous plant will fill out and get much larger as the years go by , providing nutrition as well as mantrap . You ca n’t beat that !

What a world of difference . There ’s utterly no rationality that anyone should be develop a lawn . Making a minimalist landscape painting that develop food makes so much more sense . Basically , it ’s less work for more intellectual nourishment and a prettier landscape . You ’ve really got nothing to lose !
