At the prison term , buy a house seemed like such a grown - up thing . But the allure of having a garden was too powerful to ignore . So after years of renting spot withlimited outdoor quad , my friend Tim Lally and I pool our resources in 1993 and buy a house . Tim is a landscape painting architectat Timothy Lally Designand I ’m a horticulturist at theChicago Botanic Garden , so while the qualities of the house were important , distance for a garden — even a small one — was essential . Thebackyardof our novel project was essentially a blank slate : a maculation of grass , a clothesline , and a concrete path straight out to an alley . A midget garage sat at the back turning point of the property and was the only thing that would stay because a garage is a must - have inChicago . At first spirit , it was n’t the most auspicious of spaces , but we were stoked about the possibilities .

Divided, not disjointed, was the goal.Carving up this small courtyard into smaller sections helps add intimacy to the entire space rather than making it feel smaller. A boxwood hedge serves as an unobtrusive divider between the large patio behind the house (above) and the smaller alfresco dining area at the rear of the property. The lines of sight were kept open, and the hardscaping is similar in both areas to give the landscape a seamless flow.
There’s not much missing from this 900-square-foot plot.Water features, arbors, and decorative gates are just a few other things that this small courtyard manages to pack in without sacrificing a space for the all-important plants or a spot for reading—about plants, of course.
The planting beds are no more or less important than the hardscaping. A sizable border along one property line provides enough space for big, bold plants and swaths of massed perennials (above). Keeping the garage meant losing some potential garden space, but the beds surrounding that outbuilding are jam-packed with groups of plants and singular treasures.
A thoughtful design makes the most of limited space.Generously sized patios and entertaining areas are bordered by long, narrow planting beds. Visually, the spaces balance each other out.
It’s a deliberate blend.This small area illustrates how a manageable mass of rodgersia and lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis, Zones 3–8) is offset by select singular star plants like golden bleeding heart and ‘June’ hosta.
