In a Vase on Monday. The Last of the Daffy -down-dillies.
thirtieth April is a particular day , it is my fantastic girl ’s birthday . So today ’s Vase on Monday is dedicated to my endearing missy . Big blowsy daffodils might ‘ amount before the deglutition dare and take the winds of March with beauty’but I love the later narcissi which are amongst the daintiest and the prettiest of the whole tribe and many of them are scrumptiously fragrant .
The poet , John Masefield aver :
‘ I have regard the Lady April bringing the daffodil ,

Narcissus‘Segovia’
Bringing the spring eatage and the indulgent warm April rain ’ .
Unfortunately the Lady April is a capricious lady and today the rainfall is far from soft and warm , it is insensate and cruel , accompanied by a sulfurous Frederick North eastern wind . I hope these daffodils will bring a lilliputian sunshine to the day .
The daintiest of all is the tenuous lookingNarcissus‘Segovia ’ . It has everlasting white petals and a flat lemon cup with frilly edges . One of its parent is the tricky , arrant whiteNarcissus wateriwhich fare from the High Altlas mountains of Morocco . I ca n’t growNarcissus wateribut I can grow this little beauty and I would n’t be without it . It is adept in a mass too .

Just as dainty and with an incredible fragrancy we have the jonquil , Narcissus‘Bell Song ’

Narcissus‘Bell Song ’

Narcissus ‘ Sun Disc ’ above is another Narcissus jonquilla with a delicious odor , it has pocket-sized flowers and a flat corona like a little face . I recall it is ‘ Sun Disc ’ , the medulla were labelled as ‘ Sweetness ’ and it is sure as shooting not that . I keep it in a pot by the pond .

The prettyNarcissus ‘ lark ’ is yet another in thejonquillagroup . The lemon and ointment heyday have a delectable fragrance . And are n’t they cute ?

Narcissus‘Katie Heath ’ is atiandrusnarcissus . It is larger flower than the little treasures I have sport so far . If you are interested in daffodil you will have it away that they are separate into different group or divisions . Tiandrusis Division Five and all the daffodils in this group are very delicate looking with pendant flower and reflexed petals and they normally have two or three flowers to a stem . The popular white ‘ Thalia ’ is in thetiandrusdivision . I love ‘ Katie Heath ’ for its pinky- peach colour . It is in the top ripe hand street corner of the above characterization . It is with child than ‘ Bell Song ’ and the coronna is lumpy with a hard vividness .

The pure whiteNarcissus‘Petrel ’ is another in theTiandrusdivision . It is multi - headed and beautifully fragrant . you could see it on the low-pitched correct hand side of the pic below .

Narcissus‘Bell Song’
I like to growNarcissus‘Petrel ‘ with the showyEpimedium ‘ Amber Queen ’ because they are await just at the same clock time .

I am very doting of one I corrupt asNarcissus‘Elka ’ . I grease one’s palms quite a few bulb and gave a pot to a acquaintance last yr . The disturbing matter is hers do n’t take care anything like mine . I have read that ‘ Elka ’ is other flowering but in my garden it is one of the up-to-the-minute , so perhaps it is wrongly labelled . Can anyone distinguish me if they agnize it as ‘ Elka ?

I put some frothySpiraea argutea‘Bridal humeral veil ’ in with the vase but once inside it drops its petals very chop-chop .
The little round vase has the tiny trumpet of the wicket petticoatNarcissus bulbodicumwithEpimedium versicolor ‘ Sulphureum ’ . This little narcissus will sow around if it is felicitous and the seedling are very variable and always a delight .

And to finish here is my daughter ’s dear Hector and a Vase on Monday painted especially for the function by my other best young lady , my daughter - in - law , the amazingly gifted and whole adorable Beatrice .

What a wonderful range of Narcissi you have ! The only one we seem to have in common is ‘ Katie Heath ’ , which I planted in the fall and which finished their first prime cycle in my garden in March . I ’m no-count your day started with inhuman rain but with all those daffodils I expect your garden is sunny in any weather at the second . good wishes to your daughter on her birthday !
P.S. Beatrice ’s portrait of Hector is invaluable .
Gorgeous , it ’s lovely to see these trivial lulu close up .

Oh what a fabulous natal day testimonial to your daughter Chloris – undeniably pretty and sweet too s no doubt your girl is too . disgrace about the weather – an ‘ April is the cruellest month ” kind of day but hopefully there is some warmth on the sensible horizon . I grow ‘ Elka ’ – her inners ( which morph from yellow to ivory ) are not fluted and she looks much small than your daffy . I ’m most guide with your genus Epimedium and ‘ Petrel ’ combination . A note to ego has been made 🙂
