No rules, just beautiful plants
We ’re confab with Linda Grey - Martin today .
Hello from Calgary , Alberta .
Our climate is officially Zone 4a , although many Zone 5 plants survive in my garden .

Calgary is snug to the mountains , and we encounter cursorily changing temperatures and weather pattern in all time of year , a challenge for gardener .
That being said , there are a lot of bully gardens in this part of the country , with an activeCalgary Horticultural Society(established in 1908 ) . We are always up for a challenge .
Now to my garden . The front grounds issloped , 50 feet extensive , and about 75 feet cryptical . The house is at the top of the J. J. Hill , originating from a setback concept as part of a “ garden suburban area ” plan established for the region in the early 1900s . The focus was to give a parklike appearance from both the street and the habitation .

The front to the south - facing garden was completely remodel 10 years ago , after a major home renovation . With the exception of fourlarge trees , all plant material was removed from the garden , and we bring in rich garden loam and a few wads of rock . The rock was rate at the top of the slope to hold thesoiland create wet air hole for the plant . We did have a professional lottery done to get us start , but what stay of all those ideas is the patch of lawn in the centre .
I do n’t follow any rule . I integrate things up if I care the way it looks . It ’s my garden . I bulge with coloring and texture , which includes a balance of deciduous and coniferoustrees and shrubs . For added colour through the season I also havepeonies(11 varieties),roses(7 mixed bag ) andhydrangeas(6 varieties ) . Various grasses give movement to the garden , and six character of larch provide extra interest in the drop . Combined with a very large variety show of perennial , the garden never lacks color .
My impuissance is that I always like to switch thing and move works . I have now limited that process , and it is amazing how things produce if you just let them get set up .

A true garden is never done ; it is always evolving . plant seed where you do n’t want them , weedspop up everywhere , and unfortunately some plants do n’t return in the spring , but I deliberate that one an opportunity !
A dense internet of plants fulfill the blank around the rock in the front garden with color .
Two different roseate variety ( Rosahybrids , hardiness varies by cultivar ) get colour . Between them , a peony(Paeoniahybrid , Zones 4–8 ) has beautiful leaf even after the flowers have faded .

Hydrangeapaniculata(Zones 3–8 ) blooms are circumvent by beautiful and varied foliage . In front is aJapanese painted fern(Athyriumniponicumvar.pictum , Zones 4–9 ) with silver - and - blood-red - patterned leave .
In the spectre of a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , hostas(Hostahybrids , Zones 4–8 ) dominate , and behind a heuchera ( Heucherahybrid , Zones 4–8 ) is in bloom . Most modernheucherasare engender in the first place for their foliage color , but there are variety that have beautiful flowers as well .
Freely mixing perennial with shrubs give a wonderful range of color andtexturesto the garden and ensures there are beautiful thing to look at inevery season .

Hosta grow in a wide range of mountains of climates , but they grow particularly large and lush in cold-blooded sphere .
Shrubs are the backbone of this planting , augment by perennial here and there .
