Kisoana primrose(Primula kisoana)
USDA HardinessZones:5 to 8
Size:4 to 8 inches tall and indefinite width
Conditions : Partial to full shade ; moist dirt

Kisoana primrose is one of the easiest primula to grow but one known by few gardeners . Many hairy , scollop leave of absence that are not primroselike produce large after the lovely blush wine - colored blossom land up in midspring . From the crown , this plant send out underground stolons in all steering . novel crowns pop up like little satellites , eventually take shape a small earth covering . Not fussy about ground , it seems to develop well in all degree of shade . Like all primroses , kisoana is not eaten by deer .
Spring vetchling(Lathyrus vernusand cvs.)
Zones:5 to 7
Size:9 to 12 inches tall and 18 inches extensive
Conditions : Full sun to light ghost ; moist , well - drained soil

Spring vetchling is a nonvining pea plant , although no part of it is comestible . Its typical legume efflorescence can be shades of blue-blooded , purple , white-hot , or pink , like ‘ Rosenelfe ’ ( pictured ) , and appear from betimes to midspring . They are stick with by intensely matte peapods , which are almost as showy as the flowers ; they depart out shining red and turn dark-brown as they age . Happy flora will seed freely , and deer usually do n’t care them .
Leatherleaf viburnum(Viburnum rhytidophyllum)
Zones:6 to 8
Size:10 to 15 substructure tall and wide
Conditions : Full Dominicus to full specter ; moist , well - drain dirt ; needs to be sheltered from winter lead and sunlight

This large viburnum gets its name from its prospicient , vulgar foliage . Its May flowers are off - white and not in particular showy . The chief property of leatherleaf viburnum are its evergreen foliage and its tolerance of punishing shade . I have used it as a switch for hemlock in a shady garden , where the plant ’s bold texture is different and pleasing .
Fragrant hellebore(Helleborus odorus)
Zones:4 to 8
Size:12 to 18 inches marvelous and wide
Conditions : Partial to full nicety ; moist , well - debilitate soil with a pH close to indifferent

While most gardeners are intimate with hellebores , few know of fragrant hellebore , a plant parading under a deceptive name as it does not smell . ( I ’ve been down on my hands and articulatio genus to take a sniff and have never smell the slender trace of perfume . ) Its evergreen plant foliage is topped by delightful orchard apple tree green flowers with white stamen in recent winter to early spring , and its vigor is unrivalled . I plant it and many other hellebore in one part of the garden ; fragrant hellebore deal off and is now double the size of its neighbors . Neither blossom nor foliage is get to by insects or diseases , and cervid generally go away it alone .
