1. Ratstripper
Name:Paxistima canbyi
USDA Hardiness Zones:3 to 7
Size:6 to 8 inches grandiloquent and 2 to 3 feet wide
Conditions : Full sun to partial shade ; moist , fertile , well - drain ground

What have you get in your spook garden ? Hostas ? Ferns ? peradventure an astilbe ? All great flora — in the summertime . That is why I adore this beautiful matted minuscule evergreen shrub . Ratstripper will take sunshine but is quite happy in tint , and it count just gorgeous perfectly every day of the year . Pest- and problem - free and native to the eastern United States , this is a strong shrub that will make your garden always depend its best .
2. Joint Fir
Name:Ephedera americana
Zones:5 to 8
Size:3 pes tall and 2 foot wide
experimental condition : Full Sunday ; well - drained soil

Yes , some plants in the genusEphederaare the source of ephedrine , used to make controversial diet pill . So do n’t eat this industrial plant . Just savour its unique aspect in the garden . Absolutely nothing else you may grow in the Midwest is going to give you quite this unusual grain and form . And despite looking as if it should be living in a desert somewhere , joint fir is fine with a humid midwestern summer . As a plus , rabbits and deer leave it alone .
3. Lacebark Pine
Name:Pinus bungeana
Zones:4 to 7
Size : Up to 50 foot improbable and 20 feet wide
This plant life is all about its amazing barque . The evergreen needle of lacebark pine are pretty and useful , as well , but it ’s the bark that I love . It takes a few years for the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree to ripen enough for the barque to get showy . So rush out today and get one so that you may watch it mature to its full glory . As an added bonus , this specie of pine is notably narrow — almost fastigiate in form — so it jibe well in a pocket-size garden .

4. ‘Chief Joseph’ Beach Pine
Name:Pinus contorta‘Chief Joseph’
Size:6 feet tall and 3 foot wide
Conditions : Full sun ; well - drained filth ; it performs unspoilt with some tax shelter from wintertime sunlight and wind
I ’m imagine to be let the cat out of the bag evergreens here , but that does n’t really give to ‘ Chief Joseph ’ beach pine because , well , do you see any light-green in those needles ? That glorious yellow colour is a wintertime matter , pass off to Green River over summer , but that is ok by me . That mad yellow colour makes the needles more than usually prone to burning and browning in wintertime , so site this one where it will be shelter from winter wind and maybe give it a little minute of wintertime shade .
