Down the garden path through the seasons
Kathy Schreurs in Sheldon , Iowa , is sharing her garden with us today . She publish in in good order before the change from day delivery time , and had this to say :
It ’s that time again . This weekend we ’ll be resetting our pin grass , and we ’ll be “ resetting ” thisbordertoo . Last workweek — after a long , slow , frost - spare spill ( strange for our Zone 4b Iowa location)—a killing frost and snow push us towardfall cleanup . This week has been give to removingannualsandcutting back perennials .
Next week we ’ll beplanting bulb . I hope I ’m not the only nurseryman who orderstulipsin August with a clear genial video of where each gloss and variety is go to be set , and then when planting fourth dimension arrives looks in befuddlement at the account , wondering , “ What was I thinking ? ”

I look to the picture below , taken last spring ( May12 ) , in hope that it would help me . ( It did n’t . Apparently I ’m going mostly with shades of purple for next time of year ! )
But it did inspire me to submit pic of our “ course garden , ” all taken from the same vantage point , with a few detail along the way .
This peony - blossom tulip(Tulipa‘Charming Beauty ’ , Zones 3–7 ) read up in my bulb orderliness again for 2024 . Behind it , to the left , our ‘ Sun King ’ aralia(Araliacordata‘Sun King ’ , Zones 4–8 ) is emerging . By midsummer it will be a monster , and impossible to ignore , even in the eye of vibrant annuals . They ’re on the right toward the conclusion of the way in the long opinion .

ByJune19 the tulip were gone and the perennial were satisfy in . The penstemon(Penstemondigitalis , Zones 3–8 ) and phlox(Phlox‘Opening Act Pink - a - Dot ’ , Zones 4–8 ) on the left were bring nicely together , I think . Ideadheadedthe phlox later on , and it gave back some gloss on and off all summer . The annuals , in the left front , were just getting established . We had almost no rainfall , and it was a day-to-day conflict to keep plants alive .
I had planted ‘ Unplugged So Blue ’ salvias(Salviafarinacea , Zones 7–10 or as an annual ) at the perimeter of the aralia , and they were winners all summertime long .
Thebirdhouseat the top of the obelisk was home to a family of Wren by mid - June , and the clematis(Clematishybrid , Zones 5–8 ) was in full blossom . Thesweet peasI planted as associate did n’t thrive this year . Alas .

By July 16 the globe amaranths(Gomphrenapulchella‘Truffula ’ , zone 9–11 or as an yearly ) were make their mien know in a liberal way .
A few new Tango lilies(Lilium‘Tango ’ , Zones 4–9 ) showed up , and I ’m hope they multiply before long .
This photo was remove inJulyfrom a few foot to the rightfield of thepath . ( That ’s my husband beneath the hat in the lower right . )

ByAugust12 a span of ‘ Little Quickfire ’ hydrangeas(Hydrangea paniculata‘Little Quickfire ’ , Zones 3–8 ) were showing off their delicate color .
The five globe amaranth , which bloomed right up until freezing temperatures hit , were attention - grabber on either side of the route . Thepollinatorsloved this spot .
And almost eight weeks afterwards , here ’s a last military greeting to the time of year . The path is hidden between the barberries(Berberisthunbergii , Zones 4–8 ) and blue spruces(Piceapungens , Zones 2–7 ) on the leftfield .

Fortunately the Baron Snow of Leicester ( from October 28 ) mellow out , and we will be imbed our bulbs .
