Salvia plants are herbaceous annuals or perennials with many species and countless cultivars .
They boast both decorative and culinary value , so you will certainly want to make use of these howling plant .

“ Many Salvia species are borderline hardy in the UK , so institute out in May and then taking semi - hardwood cutting in summertime is a great way to control persistence , ” share Master Horticulturist Colin Skelly .
“ Once the press cutting have engage , I am happy to remove and compost the previous year ’s plants once they have die back from frost harm .
“ With hardy Salvia , I will often practice the same manoeuvre every 2 - 3 years to keep them vigorous and succinct . ”

fortuitously , they are fair easy to pass around .
In this mail we focus on propagation via cutting , of which there are two method :
These methods are explained in more deepness below .

1) Semi-Hardwood Cuttings
In late July or early August , prepare a small Henry Clay mickle with a mix of approximately half perlite or grit ( or both ) , and one-half cut compost and piss it well .
Inspect your Salvia plant and choose a theme near the bottom that is from the current yr ’s ontogeny but which has no bud , then :
In my experience the carving will take 2 - 4 hebdomad to take root .

After the cutting germinate roots and shows fresh green outgrowth , I would recommend you let it to grow in the same pot but dispatch the plastic old bag , gradually foreshorten the frequency of tearing , and slowly increase exposure to direct sunlight .
After a few weeks pot on the cut to a with child stool .
You may transplant it to a spot in your garden if that mixed bag is sufficiently hardy for your region , otherwise pot it on so that it can be overwintered indoors .

2) Softwood Cuttings
Anytime during May , prepare a lowly clay pot with a mixture of approximately half perlite or gumption ( or both ) , and half constituent compost .
Water this soil so that it is damp through , then :
If the existing leaves have not shrivelled and fallen off and if the stem has not browned and withered , it mean good things are happening underground !
