With less than a calendar month before mini Garden Betty makes her debut , the countdown has begun . I ’ve made a list of task to tackle in the derive weeks , from laundering all the baby clothes to decluttering the theatre top to bottom . One might say I ’m beginning to snuggle , but I would counter that ’s hardly the eccentric ; I ’m clean because I have to , alas , not because I want to !
But before all of that ’s checked off , Will and I decided to take one last getaway as a family of two ( four , if you reckon the furbabies ) to our local resort of openhanded Bear in the San Bernardino Mountains .
A popular goal for Angelenos , Big Bear has a lot proceed on for a humble biotic community . In summertime , there ’s boating on Big Bear Lake , rise in Holcomb Valley Pinnacles , and tramp and biking throughout Big Bear Valley . In wintertime , there ’s snow tubing , snowshoe , snowboard , and skiing at several resorts , let in the quaint little resort of Snow Valleywhere we were marriedthree old age ago .
We actually had n’t been up to Big Bear in a few years because of lack of snow ; the drouth really took a toll on our local mountains . But with El Niño bringing some big storm this winter , we were felicitous to see the return of snowcap from our sign on the sea-coast .
We ’d been itch to make the driveway and expend a mellowed weekend up there as a little breathing space after our baby shower . Around the same time , Big Bear Boarding Housekindly volunteer us a costless stay in their vacation renting , so we turned it into a mini babymoon !
Over the year , I ’ve stayed in my fair share of cabin in Big Bear , big and small . But the folk atBig Bear Boarding Househave got that cordial reception affair down pat . We were welcomed with a handwritten card and an assortment of goody that really give the cabin a homey sense , from the toiletry in the bathroom to the pancake mixture and maple sirup we used the next morning .
The family itself was adorable , a two - sleeping room wooden cabin ideal for a modest family or a group of friends . It was cozy and comfortable , whole pug-dog - friendly , and I found myself on the lounge every evening in front of a flack , sip bottomless kisser of spiced cider .

For part of the weekend , I finished write out thank you note for our shower and catching up in my diary . I do n’t know why , but I ’m always more motivated to do these quiet , thoughtful project when I ’m in someone else ’s plate . I guess it ’s having that spillage of responsibility — nothing to make clean , no laundry to fold , and because I ’m “ on vacation , ” I ’m free from the guilt feelings of answer email . I really need more mountain retreat in my futurity !
We spend one of the afternoons guide a pass around Boulder Bay , which had all freeze over with clod of ice floating around the dockage . It was such a beautiful and surreal scene with winter in full effect .
The next good afternoon , we embark to the neighboring town of run Springs to exploreRim Nordic , the only cross - country ski area in Southern California . We ’ve force back past it mickle of times before but never discontinue to see what it was all about . The mom - and - pop ski operation sit across the highway from Snow Valley Mountain Resort and offers groomed cross - country trails for skiing , skating , and snowshoe in winter , and hatful biking in summertime .
The day was quick and cheery , the C. P. Snow was soft and forgiving , and we had a wad of play sliding down the racetrack as well as going off the trail . It seemed we were the only skiers there , so it really experience like we were in the middle of some faraway winter wonderland .
We made it to the top of Lone Pine , a twine track with views over the Mount San Gorgonio crestline . Anderson Peak gleamed white in the distance , but the owner of Rim Nordic told us the warming weather condition meant we were likely one of the last skier they could accommodate this season . The C. P. Snow was start to melt and the trails would soon be groomed for mountain biking .
It was hard to believe that spring was on the way as the snow cranch beneath our ski and boots . I ’m so glad we were able-bodied to shove in one last getaway while the gettin ’ was good . And , I ’m feeling a little whacky that this slip was also our last risky venture with Sprout in utero . By now , she ’s experienced three seasons of risky venture with us and we ’re anticipating many more this year once she ’s out in the world .
I ’ve also been reading that endorphin are go through through from the mother to the fetus , and I love thinking that she ’s already a happy infant . I hope she can feel my unadulterated excitation and joy these last few week while we wait her reaching !
