Peas are out of fashion but so easy to grow
During a public lecture I ’ll often ask for a show of hand of who grows this or that and can not assist notice how now few phratry have their own peas . confessedly these plant are a little confinement intensive and frozen peas are remarkably good , but fresh is always proficient . It ’s the same with edible asparagus , sweetcorn and Earth artichokes … until you ’ve had these really invigorated you just do n’t know how delicious they should be .
Peas have been dwelling - grown since ancientness and like field beans were consumed in the past as dry out rations for winter and seldom , if ever , deplete saucy . With millenary of selection , the original waste grey peas became milky green , by the 16th century an increasing sweetness meant new popularity , and by the closing of the seventeenth one C ‘ nosh ’ on spicy refreshed green peas had become a infamous tomfoolery of the rich . patently a ban on ladies feed them during church building services soon had everyone want peas .
Pea varieties have immensely improved

The number of varieties , shorter , taller , in the first place and late , multiply from a half XII to 150 by the time of Victorian gardener . We are lucky , because all this breeding has made garden pea a most dependable and productive harvest and as an add together bonus , most are now conveniently shortsighted , reaching the knee or waistline and needing only easy accompaniment , unlike the much more vigorous climbers of the past . Another full-grown advance is ohmic resistance to mildew so we can now sow batches from early fountain mightily through into recent summertime .
The problem with peas podding
There is one ‘ challenge ’ however ; fresh peas are just so luscious , but their podding is just so tedious . You might arise Mangetout or Sugar Snap variety to eat instead , pod and all , but they ’re still not as wonderful as reinvigorated immature peas . The solution ; churn or preferably steam them whole , and eat after the way of asparagus . You put the pod in your lip then pull it through your tooth will the hot peas inside . It ’s delicious , and perfect as a freshman .

How to make it er , easy peasy
Next , you may reduce work when grow them . Do n’t search out a barrow load of sticks to support a row of peas , use nett on a few good stakes . Ideally utilize telegram veiling , galvanised or credit card coated , not plastic , as it last longer and more significantly , plants favor the secure hold that wire crack , and it ’s ready to put up and take down . Furthermore , because we ’re no longer sowing to hail up under a long wigwam of pea stick , but under a while of netting instead , we do n’t ask to hollow that widely flat practice to sow in in .
alternatively , just wiggle a slit deep along the root of the veiling with a spade , water , sow the seminal fluid next to each other along the slit , handle them over and firm the soil . If you keep your own , you could even put whole dried seedpod stop - to - ending along the slit and tauten them in – it run fine , honestly .
gnawer and bird will always try on to have your seeds , then the seedling , so take precautions , but that ’s it until harvest time . Then take in your pea plants daily , and as they get cheeseparing to ripen , try out a pod and as soon as they ’re quick choice , Captain Cook , eat and enjoy . well-to-do peasy !
