Top Ten May Blooms.
I nearly missed the date for my top ten monthly blush this sentence as I have become so detached from the calendar . I just rushed out to take some picture but it is blowing a hooley and my endearing irises which I want to feature are look terrible : some of them are lying drunkenly on the ground and they all have tattered petals and count as if they have been partying too hard .
But I am getting forrader of myself , rent ’s go back to the beginning of the month and reckon at the May - floweringMagnolia laevifolia‘Gail ’s Favourite ’ . I have intercourse this bush , it is evergreen and the buds look as if they are covered in browned suede . They open up into masses of odorous whitened flowers . This used to be classified asMichelia yunananensisand it is not supposed to be reliably stout , but mine is several years old and has never been even more or less damaged by icing .

In other May , my excitement mounts as the buds on my tree peonies fatten up . I grew them from seed and at eleven years old they are a howling sight with so many flowers I ca n’t count them all as I did when they first start out flower . They were supposed to be Chinese Paeonia rockii , that grand , but elusive white prime with the dark , almost black flare at the base of each petal . But bees have been officious and they range from picket to dark pink but they still have the distinctive chocolatey centre . They should be known asPaeonia‘Gansu Mudan ’ and notrockii .
Paeonia‘Gansu Mudan
Whatever you call them I think you will agree they are gorgeous and worth the foresightful wait of six or seven years to get flush from seed- fully grown plant . Roses are early this class and so the garden has a June look to it decent now but the earliest May - unfolding rose is the delectable climberRosa banksiae‘Lutea ’ . It need plenty of distance , mine grows up the trunk of an honest-to-goodness apple tree and is just ten year old from a diminutive newspaper clipping .

It is a shame I had to edit this tree down but its mossy trunk bring itself to the rose and also theClematis montana ‘ Marjorie ’ which go up up the trunk on the right .

Clematis montanais howling for scramble up tree or along a fence or paries . I have several of them .

Here are a few others .

Clematis’wilsonii ’ is blooming right at the top of the tree and whilst I am sure he must be a adorable sight for the neighbours , I have to crane my neck opening to see it and I ca n’t get near enough to smack it .
I have a lovely evergreen tree from Chile which flower in May . UnlikeAzara microphyllawhich blooms in former March with vanilla scented flowers , this azara has darker yellow , much bigger and more flashy blossom . I think it isAzara serratabut I am not certain , I grew it from a newspaper clipping from my old garden , it is about about twelve years old now . The flowers look rather like those of mimosa .

Another May- flowering shrub is beautiful right now . It isCalycanthus x raulstonii‘Hartlage Wine ’ and has gorgeous burgundy blood-red flowers which are slightly fragrant . It is a cross betwwenCalycanthusandSinocalycanthus . I once try out to growSinocalycanthusand failed dismally , but this seems very easy and problem -free . It likes a sunny spot .

wistaria have been wondrous this twelvemonth . This one which I have tried to train as a banner , usually gets all its buds picked off by pigeon but this year they have taken a partiality to my thalictrums instead .
Wisteria are easy from layered cuttings . It is a waste of time strain to raise them from seeded player , they will take years to bloom and when and if , they do they will likely be unsatisfying . Over two of the arch into my secret garden I have wisteria , one is pink and the other one is white . I have an unusual inflorescence bush from New Zealand , which I now learn isSophora tetraptera . It has clusters of pea - like yellow flowers and is quite centre - catch , specially against a blue sky . The flowers are followed by with child seed pod and so I have a few infant trees coming along .

Another unusual and optic - catching tree is the Chilean Lantern Tree , Crinodendron hookerianum . It likes a sheltered spot and bitter soil . I do n’t have acid grease so I acquire mine in a great pot against the rampart . It has happily farm through the commode onto the soil .

I will cease with a few orchid .

I seem to have missed out so many May sweetheart that possibly I will do another military post presently . I have n’t said a word about my beloved irises and they merit a post of their own . But that is enough for now . I desire your gardens are surviving this terrible wind if you live in the UK . And I hope wherever you live you are keeping well and safe and do n’t forget to be A Lert . All this staying at home and enjoying the garden every single day is endearing , if you may forget the repulsion all about us . But it does think I have n’t bought one single plant since February and that is very strange for me , in fact it ’s an all - meter record . Still , when I look round the garden I think I probably do n’t actually need any more plants , although that has never stopped me in the past .
Please link me and partake your favourite May blooms .

I see from your garden that I should have invested in more shrubbery . The only gravid bushes I naturalise are peonies and roses and one large fleeceflower , but I do fill up in the “ crack ” with lavender and lemon balm , iris and , presently , dahlias . Your Magnolia laevifolia ‘ Gail ’s Favourite ’ reminds me of another magnolia shrub , Magnolia fiscata from my puerility nursing home . My sis and I used to take our pockets with the brown velvet covered bud and pretend they were miniature banana for our dolls .
Those tree diagram peonies are gorgeous ! And all those shrubs that I ’ve never heard of and that wo n’t grow here — very interesting to see . Your gardens are looking beautiful — thanks for communion ! good , -Beth
