vegetables
This class I have be after my veggie game antic with military preciseness , relative to my normal slack approaching . I have three 8’x4′ raised beds in which to originate veggie , supplemented with containers and the glasshouse for tender crops .
It ’s not a huge space , but I am aiming to get a estimable yield . you’re able to read more about my plans for thefull yr here , but for now I am concentrating on the first part of the growing season . It been a dense start in general , the conditions has been very cold and dull in March , not idealistic seed originate conditions . I am beginning to wonder what this might mean for harvest date and potential impacts to my tardy - season architectural plan .

This is the latest interlingual rendition of the plot of land plan for the first one-half of the season . Anything coloured mid - spicy is already growing away out on the plot of land , the rest is either not yet sow or growing with varying degrees of winner in the glasshouse .
In the greenhouse
Peas ‘ Blauwschokker ’ – second batch , sown last weekend , but not germinated yet .

Broad beans – 2nd great deal , sow 10 day ago , not yet bourgeon . The first batch were reasonably slow to show themselves too , I ’m not yet concerned .
Snap pea ‘ Nairobi ’ . These have burgeon forth and are now hardening off in the cold - inning . I am hoping to plant them out this coming weekend .
Beetroot ‘ Boltardy ’ – second batch , these have germinated more volitionally and robustly than their first muckle cousins . I should be able to implant them out in a couple of weeks .

Lettuce , various . I prefer to acquire lettuce that bestow itself to harvesting of farewell rather than letting a heart develop . Since the last update I have sow and pricked out a couple of different varieties , they are doing amercement .
leek . Oh dear . While some have sprout , my design to grow leeks for summer crop as infant leeks is not starting well . They are boney bet things . I might go again , and grow them in some pots rather than on the plot , using that quad for something more willing . Shallots perhaps …
multiplier onion ‘ zebrune ’ – I was n’t planning to grow any this year , but was convinced by other GYO folk on Twitter . The quad on the plot was allocated to elephant garlic but it either never shoot , or more likely was turf out by squirrels . The Allium ascalonicum have begun to germinate , just about .

On the plot
pea , ‘ Blauwschokker ’ – I planted the first quite a little out the other day having indurate them off for a period . I am using a wigwam of 8′ canes , engraft one plant life at the base of each , and one flora between each cane . I also dot a few spares around the inside of the canes . These apparently originate quite tall so I am expect to apply all 7′ of above - ground superlative that the canes furnish .
Carrots , three kind . I sowed the first batch a few weeks ago , direct on the game , but under cloche protection which had been in shoes for a couple of week . They have been slow to sprout but are now come through . I dotted some radish and spring onions in for good beat . They will grow faster than the carrot , and expend the top inch or so of soil , so should not conflict . I have thin out the radish plant to 9 per square . The carrots were post sown , 16 stations per square , so I will call for to thin those out . I have some ideas about Daucus carota sativa fly protection , more on that next calendar month .

Garlic . The Syzygium aromaticum were engraft out in November and seem to be bulking up nicely . No sign of any bulbs forming yet , but the stem are thickening and grow taller . They seem healthy but I have n’t grown them before .
Onions , from seed , ‘ Beds Champ ’ and ‘ Red Brunswick ’ . I planted these out a calendar week or so ago , they are still small , but doing ok . I will cut them out a minuscule by harvest bounce onions when quick but will leave the residue of each clump to develop to average sizing onion .
onion , from sets , ‘ electric automobile ’ . These go out in former March , having been in modules since November . They seem to be growing on well despite the cold and rain .

Beetroot ‘ Boltardy ’ . The first slew were a little unenthusiastic as seedling but I embed them anyway , what the hell . They are not yet thrive , but are make it . I put half a squash bottle over each bunch for some protection from both the elements and the sparrows .
Parsnips ‘ prizefighter ’ and ‘ Tender & True ’ . Sown last calendar week direct out on the plot . I put three seeds in each post , 16 per square , as I gather they are troublesome germinators . As with the carrots , I have also sow spring Allium cepa in the gaps , to make best utilization of the space . They are under a cloche for a bit of add heat and protection .
all-encompassing bean , three varieties . The first raft survivied the insensate snaps , and were itch to be planted out . I have used pea - reefer to support , plus some bamboo and twine . I have planted at 9 plants per lame . I am going to found the second batch less densely by way of an experiment , see what the yields are like .

Sweet pea , several varieties . I have engraft them all out . They looked a fiddling moth - eat at the prison term , but most have perked up and sent questing tendril out to find support . I am using wigwams of 8′ cane and have impart some string . This is my first proper attack to sow sweet peas , I am desire for good thing .
Rhubarb – grow aside very enthusiastically . I just have one jacket , so a couplet of crumble ’s worth believably , but I can already tell it is producing more stem than last year .
love apple and chillies . I ’m cover these in a separate update , but serve it to say that the tidings is interracial . I do have some decorous size Lycopersicon esculentum plants and some nice seedlings . The chili pepper are mostly unsatisfying so far , although some are now beginning to show true folio . It has just been too cold for them , even in the het up workbench .

white potato , earlies . I have ‘ Charlotte ’ and ‘ Lady Crystl ’ , which I have planted , one per pot . The pot are recycled florist bucket , acquired for cent each from a local supermarket , suitably drill for drain . They are in a admixture of garden compost and rot manure , plus I tot some plant food for secure measure . I have 24 such pots , 12 of each multifariousness . I fill the pots to the top , the leafage will take a few weeks to break through .
Potatoes , main . I have ‘ Sarpo Mira ’ . Or Ihad‘Sarpo Mira ’ . When I blend in to plant them up I find out that most had rotted in the old bag . Just four were intact , but I bought another pack of 8 . These are a cloggy cropping potato , so the pots used for the earlies are too small . I have used 40L sacks , I have a stash from a manure delivery a brace of years back . I planted two per sack on top of a few inches of the same compost / manure / fertilizer mix as for the earlies , then fulfil up the traveling bag with garden compost . I have 12 seed spuds , so 6 bags . I am pass to attempt to arise some gnome dome in the upside of the bag , just to squeeze more crops from the same space . I ’m not sure how well that will work , it ’s a first for me .
That ’s it for April ! There ’s a mess going on with much more to get . In a match of calendar week I will be sowing bean and squash seeds , in the glasshouse to begin with , planted out on the plot mid - May when the risk of frost is negligible unit of ammunition here .

How are your GYO plans come along this yr ?
I ’ll be back in a month or so with another plot update .
